Windows 7 black sceen
Hello all,
Got a Windows 7 laptop, boots up to black screen with mouse, that is it. Cntr-alt-del does not work. Same thing in safe mode, etc...There are three restore points, each one gives an error and does not work.
Any suggestions?

What is the history behind the issue? Was it working fine one minute and then not fine the next?
Was there an external monitor hooked up to it?
Try the fN + F7 (or one of the F keys) for video...
Try an external monitor.

This was how it was brought to me. Its not a video issue, as I said, I have a mouse pointer on the screen.
Repair from Windowd 7 CD says there are no problems detected. Go figure...

- When you get to the black screen, what happens if you:
- try to right-click it?
- or press [Enter]?
- or press [F11]?
- or press [Alt][F4]?
- or press [Ctrl][Esc]?
- Does Windows function as you would expect it to in "Safe mode with networking"?

No keyboard sequences or keys work. I have tried to get use on screen keyboard, but it reports as being disabled.
All safe modes do the same thing....

Remove the drive. Use a usb enclosure, or slave it in another win 7 machine. Delete the pagefile.sys file. Then run chkdsk. Then run an antivirus of your choice on it. Then run Malwarebytes. Then put it back in the host computer. It should boot. Download and run combofix. Make sure to turn off any antivirus program running on the computer first.

Just curious ...
If there is nothing but a "black screen with mouse" and "No keyboard sequences or keys work", how are you able to: - try and "use on screen keyboard",
or
- get to the "three restore points"?

I'm curious, was this after they tried installing an update or service pack? I had something similar when the SP1 for Win7 came out. Nothing worked out for me as well, I had tried a repair install, a checkdisk, even malware cleanup (it was clean).
If you do come up clean as well slave the drive and do a checkdisk though. If you have bad sectors I could see this happening. Also are we sure the hardware is not bad? Perhaps this unit has bad circuits or some sort of moisture damage.
One Script to rule them all.
One Script to find them.
One Script to bring them all,
and clean up after itself.

Sorry, I wasn't clear in my previous posts - the only keyboard sequence that does work is the one for the ease of access window. But the on screen keyboard reports that it is disabled. I have not found another key or sequence that does anything.
I tried the restore points using startup repair.
I don't know if any service pack was installed lately or not. I will try to contact the owner and see. They probably don't know if it was set to autoinstall.

jakkwb - you originally stated-> " boots up to black screen with mouse, that is it"
We take that to mean that you do NOT see anything on your screen. Is that correct?
But then you just now stated:
the only keyboard sequence that does work is the one for the ease of access window. But the on screen keyboard reports that it is disabled.
So... is your screen black with nothing on it OR can you actually click on icons and such?

Steve - There is nothing on my screen at all except for mouse cursor on solid black background. My original comment " boots up to black screen with mouse, that is it" is exactly right.
To recap again, the only Windows key sequence that works (when above is happening) is Windows+U, which brings up Ease of Access window, which would normally allow me to use the onscreen keyboard, but it has been disabled.

Ran a chkdsk from the CD. No errors found. Boots the same.

MobilePCPhysician is probably on the right track... You could download one of the many bootable AntiVirus software and give that a shot.
There's been a virus out that marks all files to Hidden...
