Intel's future plans with desktop cpus....this is going to tick off enthusiasts.
Looks like Intel's future desktop cpu plans are going change alot of things and not so good for others.
Worst of all, they've done a really bad job communicating about it. Using only soldered on cpu's on desktop motherboards in the not so distant future.

Funny, this was tried about 10 years ago. I remember we ordered some because it sounded cool. In the end the concept sucked when we realized that you would have to replace the whole board and proc when the proc or board failed.
One Script to rule them all.
One Script to find them.
One Script to bring them all,
and clean up after itself.

I see no issue with lower-cost computers. Believe it or not, a socket adds a huge cost to a motherboard, you're looking at ~$10 part for a motherboard that sells retail for <$100.
Realistically the days of upgrading the CPU and keeping the rest are long gone. You build a machine and by the time you want/need to upgrade the CPU it's more cost-efficient to get a new system. A pin-less CPU means shorter paths to other peripherals, which in turn opens the gate towards faster transfer speeds. I believe that there will be a different market for higher-end systems where you'll still be able to choose your CPU for a premium.

I found an updated link about Intel clarifying about this. They'll stick with socketed cpu motherboards for a few years yet.

I am soo glad i don't use Intel hehehehehe
I can continue to use board/cpu combinations of my choice.
They best watch they dont galvanize support between board
manufacturers to side with AMD

I wouldn't be to smug about that if I were you Mr. Ferrit.
I'm assuming you are more than aware of AMD's years of financial, fabrication, performance and competition struggles against Intel and recent rapid changes in the computer market.
In this article, AMD is committed to socketed cpu's well into 2014.
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/new...ugh_least_2014
The key word to AMD's commitent to socketed cpus only applies as long as it "exists" as a company.
If in the near future AMD goes bankrupt or gets sold off in pieces to other businesses, then it's commitment to socketed cpus is null and void.

Cooking chef i have just a few things to say.
I have heard all about how intel, and AMD is going under,
and how intel will crush AMD and how buying ATI was the end for AMD .
Guess What
They are still innovating and still building cheaper chips,
and still producing a better product at a better price.
Oh and please save the "Well Intel is better at bench marks".
Cause no one cares, they care about the price, period.
They also have the leading graphics engine built right in.
I hope Intel kills off changeable chips right away.
Like tomorrow would suit me perfect. That way a few
of the huge motherboard manufacturers like Gigabyte,MSI,
and Asus can get behind AMD.
Who by the way will be more then
slightly pissed at a plan to take away their overall upgradeability.
They love the open market.
DDR/RDRAM all over again.
Only this time hopefully worse for the other guys.
So save your oh so old "doom and gloom" for some
of the more gullible people.

AMD used to make good chips.
That was 10 years ago. Things have changed and they became a niche market, only for some DIY fans. Usually Intel chips will deliver comparable performance for a comparable price.
I used to be a fan, only used AMD chips since the days of the 233MHz K6. That until my current build where I switched to Intel with no regrets.
And now we live in a world where CPU speed doesn't matter that much anymore, it's no longer the bottleneck except in some high-end games.
I agree the days of AMD are numbered. Unfortunately.

Lots of noise but after 13 solid years of building nothing but AMD i will let the record stand on its own.
Intel has camps full of naysayers who keep harping the same doom.

Ferrit, I admire your staunch and die hard support for AMD. Doesn't change what is currently going on. Telling me to spare the old AMD gloom and doom scenario doesn't convince me AMD isn't out of the woods. I supported AMD over the years with systems of my own. Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Custom Built System, HP 12.1" tablet/laptop with AMD Turion 64 X2, HP Omni 21" All in 1 desktop with AMD E-350, etc. Things and times have changed. Yeah, I've heard of Intel going under too....not going to happen anytime soon with their big cash reserves. Different situation for AMD.
I used the words "If In The Near Future..." in my last sentence because of AMD's current financial situation and company restructuring and layoff struggles. Intel's balance sheet is in way better shape than AMD's to weather the current weaker economy.
I'm not concerned with Intel's vs AMD's cpu benchmarks. It all comes down to sale numbers of their products, market share performance, profits, not selling products at a $$$ loss and you know who the leader is in that department.
Intel doesn't have to crush AMD, the market and AMD's own mistakes are doing that for them already.
EX) Problems/Bugs/performance issues with AMD's first gen Phenom's plagued them until they released the Phenom II's to correct the first gen problems. Intel capitalized with their socket 775 Core2duos and quad's at AMD's expense during that time. Intel is more cautious not to make big mistakes again from their past experiences.
The Owner/Operator of Portable Office Computers here in Saskatoon (whom I keep in occassional contact with) used to be an AMD only promoter/seller of custom built AMD systems until his disappointment with the original Phenoms. He made a business decision to carry Intel custom built systems/laptops and hasn't looked back since. He still carries AMD, but Intel based systems are his main seller now.
I believe AMD made a good decision of acquiring ATI to incorporate graphics into their cpu's to beat out Intel in terms of onboard graphic performance, but it came at a price. AMD inherited ATI's Debts which hampered AMD to invest in it's business just before the financial crisis hit.
I do not dispute Amd has some strengths with their cpus/apus in the server, graphics, low power units, value budget markets. It's not making them enough $ and they can't continue to go further in the red. Their only realistic chance to continue existing in some form is for a company with deep pockets to buy them out or aquire them. If/when that happens, we won't know what AMD will be like. I can't count on it being the same it always has been.
