It does matter somewhat, you want to have the twisted pairs together so that they cut down interferance.
I don't make cables anymore, I either get some retail ($12 for a 40' and $15 for a 50')
or go to the local tech shop and have them make me one (if I need a cross-over)
I know how; I am just not good at it. Takes me 5+ minutes if I have the tools. Where I am at now, I don't have the tools... darn :-)
