Wouldn't have believed it if I didn't experience it...
She comes in, attitude a-blazin', all upset that the printer we sold her about 3 months ago stopped working. She reports that the output from the printer just kept getting lighter and now it is all "faded and stripey-looking".
So I plug it in, print a test page and say:
"Huh. It looks like your just out of ink."
She cocks her head about 5 degrees to one side, just like the RCA dog, and offers a bottomless, blank stare. A drop of drool oozes from her over-painted lips, and she says, "What do mean, out of ink?"
Long story short, this "person" thought the ink fairies came and replenished the printer when she was asleep. Or perhaps she thought the printer didn't use ink at all, who knows.
I am continually amazed by the lack of understanding some people posess concerning the devices they rely on.

As commonplace that I had that when I used to work in retail (Staples), it still amazed me every time.
In fact, one person whom I sold the printer to was like that, and when I sold them the printer I told them about the cartridges...

once in a while I still get people who say we sold them defective ink cartridges cause they don't work, only to take the protective tape off the ink cartridge and have it work perfectly.
That'll be 30 bucks, thanks for comming out....

I once had a guy call me, to say "I cannot move my mouse any further".. why is that?, I asked... "well..." he said, "I have gotten to the edge of my mousepad."
The concept of picking the mouse up to reposition it was apparently beyond him.

Yeah, that's right! You didn't know that? That's exactly how the ink gets replaced. Hahahahaha!!! Great story.

Heh, my mom had just replaced the ink cartridges in our printer a couple weeks ago. She told me to get something printed out. I promptly opened the printer and removed the tape from the bottom of the cartridge. The tape that clearly says "Remove before use."
sigh....9 more months till college....

Department head: "I've just received this new form in the mail that we'll be using from now on with our clients. I have to email it to an impatient client! The form printers say they can't email me or the client a copy, but can mail it to me on floppy. I hate to, but I guess we'll have to wait", he says to me while resting his hand on my scanner.
Me: "Maybe I have an alternative. . ."

Other people's parents....
The thing that gets me is that I am sure that a lot of these Printer Challenged people have used typewriters. Remembers those? From as far back as I can recall (heh not that long ago), typewriters used something called a Ribbon. That was a thing that needed to be replaced after a while of use. Did typewriter sales people encounter the same idiots about the ribbon as we do about ink?
