Post Bigger-and-betterism

I was looking for an inexpensive digital camera the other day. All I really need it for is to take pictures for my web site, so I don't need high resolution or huge amounts of features.

A friend of my was with me, and kept gravitating towards the $1000+ cameras. "Oooh! Look! 3.3 Megapixel! Oooh! Look! This one does movies! Oooh! Look! This one records to CD-R!"

I don't WANT that stuff! I want a ~$300 digital camera that takes decent pictures.

My grandfather did the same sort of thing while shopping around for long distance plans. "Wow! Look at this one! 500 minutes for only $25!" "Do you actually make 500 minutes worth of long distance calls in a month?" "Ummm... No... But this plan gives you 500 minutes!"

How often do you have to deal with this sort of thing, people who keep wanting better and better, even though they have absolutely no need?

I am really not that way with anything except my computer. That is the only place that I want the best. I have been getting tired of my Dual P3 733, so I will very shortly be buying a Dual Palamino. Some people put turbos on their cars, I just do it on my computer...

I had a boss like that once. He was very odd and excentric *cough* NUTBALL!! *cough..cough* This guy purchased about $9,000 in computer equipment to play Solitaire. He just had to have the biggest and the best. Although he knew he was doing it. The crazy ba$tard was rich as hell and he knew it. He would sit there and laugh, calling me up to tell me how fast the cards moved now.

Ummm, Its important for those cards to bounce smoothly when you win.

Until you've used a dual proc box for a while, you can never truly appreciate the value of response time. I will NEVER go back to one measley processor.

I know what you mean though, I was around this guy for so long that I started acting the same way...I had to have the best. Now, I'm broke, so my machine is a piece of crap.

I get it often, but never fall into their lure unless it is more durable, reliable, and fits into my max allowed budget. $1000 for a camera exceeds my max by the way.

It is good to have an open mind and listen to what the others have as a learning experience. Just let that person know you don't feel ready to jump into the best right now.

This is what my job is all about. Setting brand new Dell P3 933s, so that people can run Outlook and Word at the same time, with the occasional game of free cell. It's a sad, sad display.

I have a similar gripe, except my problem
is with _software_.
So Adobe Premiere 6.0 is out now, at
around $650. So where can I get a humble
copy of version 3.0, for around $30? I'd
even go so high as $125 for version 5.0.

I don't need the prettiest sparkly new one,
at least not until I've learned the old one!

Same thing for 3D Studio MAX. Version 4 is
selling at about $4,000. Whoa. Way too
much for my budget. How much for version 3?
2.5?

Actually, props to Adobe Photoshop for not
being quite as bad about this. Photoshop LE,
which goes for about $69 to $99, is a
stripped down version of 5.0 (the current
release at the time), and it does more than
everything I need.

Of course, Photoshop is up to 6.5, I think, now, and I haven't seen any new LE around...

*grumble*
