    Question Anti Virus?

The only time I ever used an antivirus was when I was at school and my friends would use thier disks (always infected) in my computer. Since getting home, I have avoided installing an antivirus, and have never been infected.
My question is, do you use an antivirus, why or why not. If so, what do you use?

I've only had one run-in with a virus. I had "borrowed" my friend's copy of Windows 3.11 and picked up a virus called "exekiller." Served me right.

I received a trial copy of Norton's Antivirus which expired last week, and about a year ago I did a McAfee trial so I could make an anti-virus boot disk for a friend. But those are the only times I've used virus protection.

If you keep up with your Windows Critical Updates, don't run weird files, don't swap software, don't surf questionable sites, and keep an eye out for email viruses and you should be alright.

Yes, I use McAfee. I don't let it run in the background as it hogs too many resources, memory, etc. It is only enabled while accessing the web, downloading files, and checking e-mails.
It is just like safe sex...don't put your floppy in anybody else's computer and don't let them put their floppy in yours!

"Since getting home, I have avoided installing an antivirus, and have never been infected"

How do you know that you do not have a virus??? If it's a date triggered virus or one of the latest email viruses, you probably wouldn't be able to tell until it was too late and after you infected everyone else you know.

We remove about 20 or so viruses per month, it seems as though over the past few years viruses are easier to get, primarily due to the internet.

I personally favor Norton AntiVirus, I haven't used McAffee since Win95b (McAffee's screen scan would screw up with open gl screen savers, or the system would hang on boot up... so i developed an attitude)

I like F-Prot ....free for personal use, fast, reliable and, being a DOS proggy, works when Windoze won't ... www.complex.is/f-prot is the place to go.

I run Norton A/V on my systems. I just don't let it load on start up. Only use it when needed.

    I use Norton Antivirus.

You should perform an antivirus check. You will be amazed when you see the first infected file on your system!

    Cool

Got the "Happy" virus a year ago. Luckily, it wasn't malicious.

    Now, I use McAfee.

Heck, we still have people (engineers) at work opening e-mail attachments with the "ILOVEYOU" virus...

    Cool

I use norton on all 4 of mine,I would never be with out atleast something,I'll bet that all those poeple that do not use or don't like AV apps have not had to deal with an invasion on their pc.If you have enough ram and configure the AV app correctly, then resources should not be a problem.these guys that don't use av apps probably don't back up anything either, or use firewall software.(I use zonealarm pro).oh well, everybody learns sooner or later.

    Thumbs up

I used to use Norton 5.0, then Mc afee, Then NAV2000, and now I use the one from Mjeinex which works okay and is not a system hog. I don't have it run in the backround, just on demand and I do a full scan about once a month.
Last year I got the "ILOVEYOU" bug, which surprised me since I never recieved any e-mail on it. Apparently got it from a web site, it was found and quarentined by Norton in my TempInternet cache. No damage.
To all who are just "careful" and don't use AV, please don't put me in your address book!

I don't use an antivirus because I don't open up just any attachment. I also don't use Microsoft Outlook or outlook express so I don't worry about MS viruses (seems that most viruses now a days attack MS). I am also carefull about people using my machine. I have a strick policy: NO ONE USES A FLOPPY DISK THAT HAS BEEN IN ANOTHER COMPUTER. Everyone in the house has to follow the rule or there profile in 2000 is gone and they can't log on.
