The shop assistants im my local Tandy were hopless, we used to ask for totally normal PCB components and get blank looks, after 5 min of looking ourselves found they did stock them.
Soooo we hatched a revenge plan!
Used to watch StarTrek TNG and write down some of the tecno babble that Gordi or O'Brian would come up with, then go into Tandy and ask about it.
"Hi I'm looking for a Plasma Phase relay for my Parellel port"
I sware this worked, with shop assistant asking the manager and everything. After a few weeks they worked out what we where up to!

there's a computer shop near my house that's been open for like 4 years. they have had three locations, two names, and at least two owners. the only people I've seen buy stuff from there is a friend and I.
When the place first opened, one of the things they were selling was a radio tuner card & remote. It was pretty cool, but I was strapped for cash, and didn't get it. I came back a month later, and they said they were all out, but were going to get a new shipment in within thew week. so i leave my name, phone # and email address and ask them to contact me. 2 weeks go by, and no cigar. so I go there, and they tell me that had some, but they're all out again and didn't know when they were getting more. so i but a joystick, cause i was into flight sim, and left. a year later, I want a new bx mobo. They say they usually stock them, but didn't. I'm like, ok, can i special order it. so they say yes, take down the info, my name, email, etc. month goes by, no contact. go back, ask what's up, they "forgot" im thinking, man I want to spend 150 bucks on a mobo, and you forgot? so i politly ask them to reorder, they say sure. never got a response. so i end up getting it somewhere else, but now later I want to stick a flip chip in there, so i need a slocket. I got to the computer place, and ask for one. they tell me they don't exist. i say, yes, they do. they tell me that the arcitechure of the pentium 3 is totally different from that of the pentium 2, and slocket's don't exist. I say, ok, then please just order a abit slocket 3 for me, and don't worry about wherer or not it doesn't exist. check two times, they never order it, and i give up on ordering stuff. just last week i went there to see if I could pick up a p3 750, and they tell me they don't stock p3's. they ask if i want something else, maybe a p4 chip, and i say no thanks and leave before they tell me I can put a p4 in a p3 mobo or something.
i've seen them sell only a single cd rw disc and a joystick to me, and a zip disc to a buddy of mine. I think they are a front for the mafia, i've never seen anyone else there, except for the italians hanging out in the back room. ok, they don't have italians anywhere, but they don't get customers either.
So, so busy lately. Oh, where do I start?

I have run into similar shops. I send the wife up to the local mom and pop shop figuring on getting a cheap run-of-the-mill basic keyboard. We all know they run about $US10.00. Well the cheapest thing this place had was US$30! for some POS junk. Luckily the wife has been around me long enough to know when they are trying to rip her off on PC parts...but come on how can anyone stay operational with prices worse than the leading chain stores?
So I went to a different shop they sold me a 7.99 keyboard (exactly what I needed) and I have been going there ever since!
Just a little common sense on pricing could go a long way...either that or they expect ppl who don't care about pricing to continually break down the front door to buy stuff.

heh, this one store i called regarding video cards tried to sell me some Diamond video cards for US$10. he even admits that the company that makes them doesnt exist anymore, and that he has no idea any specs on the cards, but he kept saying "hey, 10 bucks is pretty good."

i stay away from small mom and pop stores and some online stores, i ordered some stuff from www.tcwo.com and they have good prices but when i would recieve there crap it wouldnt work, my case wasnt steady my cpu was crap didnt work, it was passed my return date so i couldnt do jack sh*t. so i ordered online from a store in illinois where im from, cpu works great.
but usually i would go to big stores that way i can bitch if i have a problem and get is solved or replaced or my MONEY BACK, usually small mom and pop stores will over charge and if you have a problem your stuck with getting it replaced and many times dont have a chance in hell getting your money back. so you have to stick with there crap.
i went to computer a computer show and purchased a monitor and sound card, well with my luck sound card SUCKED i couldnt get sound from left speaker i had to drive all the way to his stupid house that was far far away and got a sound card but he gave me the wrong F*cking CD so it didnt have the driver for it, i had to download driver, then 2 months later my monitor blew out, this guy and his bullsh*t merchandis got me pissed i didnt even bother calling him back about the monitor, i didnt pay that much for it anyway, now if i buy a monitor i'll stick to best buy or something.
small mom and pop stores SUCK, the ones i visited over charge and they have crappy parts

I usually try to deal with the chain stores on certain items (it is about 1½ hour trip). I get a chuckle out of Fry's Electronics . If you know what it is you want, and where it is located, your OK. Their prices are very good, but the help sometimes is not the best. I also get at web sites that have excellent prices then want to charge Jesse James shipping and handling rates. I was looking at buying a ½ gross of thumb case screws awhile back. Found what I was looking for at a very reasonable price and it was $22.50 s/h . I called the site and told them to just deliver regular mail (parcel post) and the man said that was against the law to send over a 1 pound package through the mail the Post Office would not deliver! I told the guy you could not drop off over a 1 pound package in a mail box you had to mail the package directly from the counter or an agent (Mailboxes etc.). He flat out stated that I was mistaken that option no longer existed, but would give me a special 1 time UPS Ground rate of $16.50. I refused and bought the screws at, where else, Home Depot (haven't seen them there since).
I only post using 100% recycled electrons!!!
Stay on the bomb run, boys. I'm going to get them doors open if it hair lips everybody on Bear Creek.
