    Post HOLY MOTHER OF....!!!

Well my morning just started off with a bang. Literally.

The boss ordered a new 1000va UPS for the rack at the office. Got it in last night just before I left. So, I plug said UPS in to let it charge overnight. This morning I come in and shut down the servers and install said UPS in the rack. I plug it back in and I get lights. Good sign. I plug the server (Linux Server, PDC, DHCP, ODBC, Firewall, router, Web server, Mail server, File server, etc. all in one machine) I turn on said server. BANG!!!!! Smoke everywhere. I haven't really cussed like a sailor in years, but I did this morning.

Turns out the UPS was for 220v power. The power supply in the suffered a catastrophic failure. Fortunately, I replaced the power supply and everything came up fine. Not a good way to start the day though.

You know, they make about 50 different types of plugs for 220/110v and 30/50/etc amp connections. Why can't they make it simple?

    Golden Rule:

Always check the power supply/UPS is set to the right voltage!!!

Found this one out the hard way myself many times, due to having a lot of U.S.A.F. bases in the area. The amount of power supplies the stores I have worked in, have had to replace due to this happening when the customer has bought their machines in, I lost count of a long time ago!!! In the end I placed printed out signs on every work bench warning to check the PSU before plugging in for correct voltage.

Must admit it sure wakes you up when it happens!!!

I admit I should have looked it over more carefully. I would have seen the specs sticker. But. I was in a hurry since the server is our web server and m ail server. So, I assumed (my fault) the boss ordered the right UPS. He didn't and I had to fix a bigger mess.
