Longest you ever ran a cpu with no fan
not talking bout old xt-386 days, I'm talking bout the new burn your hands in 3 seconds after turning it on type. Just came back from lunch only to discover that the new intel 800mhz I just put in a guys machine had no power to the cpu fan (oops). lucky it was only bout 45 min. Before that was a pPro left running a burnin for 8 hours with no power to the cpu fan (I'm really bad for that). Luckly both processors survived the ordeal. How bout you guys (and gals...woulden't want PcPrincess to tear a strip off me too)

In my personal copmputer, after fitting a new hdd, didn't notice that i had accidently pulled the power to my intel 233mmx cpu fan. wasn't till about 4 months later that i discovered the fact, but it still ran fine. And I use it almost 24/7

Well I had an old 286 for about 6 years - ohh wait - I'm sure you mean newer stuff requiring a fan - Cyrix 6x86 166 - for about 6 mo., celeron about 6 mo, p2-233 for 2 hours to show my boss (at the time) that you couldn't send out machines without the $5 fan.

I've run an athlon for about 3 hours without one, just to see how hot they really get.. (They get HOT!) But I've been running a P-5 133 for about a year now with no heatsink - no problems.

I once ran a celeron 433 ( i think ) without the fan plugged in for a few hours ... un-intentianally of course..
In the office, we have a P166, running without a fan at all. It has a small heatsink, but thats it. Its been running like that for about 18 months, Im told, and its also the most reliable machine we have. Go figure.

you didn't say it couldn't be under clocked!!! i ran a pIII 600E on a 66 bus without a fan for 2 hours....but why the hell would any idiot want to run an under clocked processor

I did the same thing. Built a machine, loaded Milli on it, started the burn-in when I realised the fan was not plugged it. The heatsink was hotter than heck but no harm no foul! Plugged the fan in and tested the cpu...all is well. Phew!!

I can't believe you guys (and gals???) run your cpu's without fans or heatsinks just to see how hot they get! I made the mistake of using a couple of cheap fans on Cyrix M-II's and had to replace every chip 'cause they kept on crashing, even with new fans. I know have the best fan & heatsink you can get on my Athlon and it never locks up or slows down (AND I RUN ME).
Besides, keeping it cool is, well cool.

Well, when I was upgrading my T-bird 800 with a new CD drive, I accidentally yanked the fan connector loose from the motherboard......I thought I smalled something, ya know? But I thought it was the new burner warming up. Anyway, after about an hour I got curious, and had a look...oopsie!
It still runs great though, even though my wonderful, godly, heavenly Agilent ArciCooler was burning hot to the touch...but I think that thing is what saved my CPU....it managed to cool enough with the ambient airflow. Jeez, you know those things are STILL hard to get, but they're great.

An AMD K-6 2 500 for over an hour. If it wasn't for the large heat sink, I'm sure it would have been toast.

I've seen various processors running without actually being cooled, because the fans were not working.
The funny thing is, I've never seen a fried processor because of a faulty fan!
Probably, the error messages and the blue screens had prevented their users from leaving them work for hours! That's the most logical explanation..

Had an old P100 server running day and night for several years... but no heatsink or fan on the CPU! There was a brown spot in the center of the chip.
It was working flawlessly (up for something over a year) Added a heatsink and fan anyways.
Had a friend who for some wierd reason tried to remove his socketed CPU as soon as he shut it off. He had a little burn mark on each of his fingers where he touched it.

If it ain't broke, and you try to fix it anyway, then it WILL need fixing!

We have a few Dell's kick'n around at work from an old tech's bad decision that doesn't work there anymore. They are p3's @ 500Mhz with no fan, just a heat sink and some card board that is suppose to lead the hot air away from the heatsink up into the powersupply to be exhausted. Some brainiac was really thinking there. BTW, these are the only machines we have that multiple times on a daily basis.
