A Great Book

My wife was talking to me about this book that she heard about, and I was wondering if anyone else has heard of it? It's called something like, "I Am Not A Used Car Salesman", and it deals with customers' problems with the service industry, and how the service industry can help the customers with those problems. It's written by a fashion designer, I believe, but it offers a lot of insight...it seems that retail is retail regardless of it being a high-tech industry like computers, or selling buttons...customers are morons, and they treat service people like they're out to get their money.

Hehe ya cust's are morons, and this comes from a guy still in his after-school job at Safeway. Do you kno how many ppl have trouble filling out a film developing envelope? It's not that hard. Name and Phone #, type of film (35mm, 110, or other), style (color prints, B&W, slides) and then developing, kodak or safeway. Kodak at 1 or 2 sets, or kodak advantix at 1 or 2 sets. Safeway at 3" or 4", 1 or 2 sets. Everybody messes it up.

Ppl just don't understand that because 2 comps are sitting next to each other doesn't mean that they're connected. We have 2 workstations to log film and rent movies off, and they still think that because it sits next to the register that we have all the information on them in the world and kno what they bought for dinner last night.

And yes, just because it doesn't say 2-day rental doesn't mean it's not a 2 day rental. All new releases are 2 day rentals, just like ALL the signs say. And no, if u rent just one instead of the 2 for $5 special, you can still keep the one for 2 nights.

Geez. ppl just don't listen.

And come get ur damn film. it's been in the drawer for 6 mos.

No, u can't use our phone. There're pay phones outside either door.

Sorry, I try to be nice, but if it weren't for those damn customers, i'd me MUCH happier.

If you want to read a good book that has nothing to do with PCs, customers, idiots, Microsoft, Internet, etc. Try kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughter-House Five"

This is my favorite and I am curious to see what everyone else thinks after they read it or if they already have.

Actually, a good Vonnegut book for this would be "Cats Cradle"...its all about the day the US dropped 'the bomb', but concentrating on how some individual American's lives went on untouched. lt really starts to remind you of some of the customers:
The guy who made the A-bomb is home playing with a piece of string when the destruction ensues, completely oblivious : : The customer who "didnt do anything, my sysfiles just deleted themselves" is home playing Quake on their backup PC.

I got out of SafeWay as fast as I could... ugh. I was there for 2.5 yrs, and it was all I could do to deal with the idiot managers and regulations. It's there to protect the gosh-darn store from morons, but JEEZ! Oh well. /end rant

Yes, books are good. I particularly like historical analyses... seems that there are so many things to learn from past civilizations. Which is why the US is slowly falling from the world economic power it has been, losing ground to China and Europe. But we'll get into my theories on that later
