    Post My speakers are posessed

My boss had mentioned strange noises coming from my workroom while I was out on call. Muffled voices to be precise.

I didn't have a funky screensaver or anything, so I suspected a virus. I scanned and couldn't find a virus. I couldn't even find a WAV file, an MP3 file, or an RA file with muffled voices. It was a shop mystery for weeks. I joked that we had a ghost.

Eventually I heard the a mysterious voice too. A man's voice came from my computer speakers. It only last a second, so the time I turned to my machine the voice had gone. Nobody else was in the shop, so the chances of someone playing a joke on me were pretty slim.

From then on I'd hear the voice about once a week, but by the time I turned to check my computer the voice was gone. It had to be some sort of practical joke... right?

One day I had uplugged our test speaker's from a customer's computer. A few minutes those computer-less speakers spoke to me! The audio cord was still dangling from the shelf!

That's about the time that I figured out what the voices were. There are a lot of truckers around here. Some have beefed up CB radios, which are evidently powerful enough to be picked up with my cheapo Labtec speakers.

Mystery solved. Where's my Scooby snack?

I know the feeling! My dad used to be a police officer, and when he would come home from supper, we could tell because the TV would go fuzzy. Sometimes, you could hear him radio in that he was taking his lunch.

My nextel phone used to interfere with my PC speakers and radios. The weirdest was: One night I was up in my room watching a movie. All of the sudden I hear all these weird noise pops and noises coming through the speakers...turns out my Nextel was ringing downstairs in my office (directly below my bedroom) and it was interfering with my speakers...the damn thing was going through the floor and fubar-ing my sound! Imagine what it does to you when the thing is next to your head! Needless to say I got rid of the phone.

Something similar happened to me. When I first started using Eudora for email, I downloaded their speach pack. It basically reads the subject line from email you get. While paying around, I set up a filter that would activate the speach. It wasn't too impressive so I kind of forgot about it.

Sometime later, people started to complain that my computer was talking while I was away from my desk. For many weeks I thought they were nuts, until one day I was sitting in front of the computer when I started talking to me. Let me tell you, it scared the crap out of me.

We had one customer (a byatch) call and complaining that her computer was a piece of garbage, and was locking up all the time. So, I went out there and took a look at the system. She had this 10 year old cordless phone sitting right on top of the computer. She wasn't home, so I unplugged the phone, and moved it away from the computer. I left a note saying, "The problems were because of the cordless phone being too close to the computer. Please keep the base of the phone at least 10' away from the computer."
A few weeks later, she calls again, foaming at the mouth that her computer is a piece of crap, and is not working. I ask if her cordless phone was near the computer. "Yeah, why?"
I told her to move the phone, and it should work.
She called back a few weeks later, again screaming about her computer. I go out there. Sure enough, the base of the phone is sitting on her computer. I unplugged it and moved it...AGAIN... She called and asked why her phone was moved. I told her that the phone was causing interference with her computer. It was the cause of her problems."
She said she really didn't believe me, and I told her that it was a law of physics. Her phone was sending out radio waves at close to the same frequency that her computer was running. The result was that the computer was interpreting the radio waves as instructions, and locking up.

Friend of mine worked at a Burger King just off the highway. If a trucker drove by with a hoped-up CB it would blead over the drive-up intercom.

Never had an experience picking up trucker's on my speakers, does sound interesting though.

Those freaking Nextel's are ridiculous though. I had an older model from work, it would disrupt my monitor, tv, t.v.'s in bars, my car stereo, everything. Here's the kicker though, I was in a hotel at a coference for a couple of days. The first night in the room I'm making phone calls with my Nextel, when the firealarm goes off in the room, after a quick goodbye, I call the front desk to tell them. They saw the alarm and had dispatched someone to turn it off. This happened three more times before the maintenance guy and I realized it was the &*CK&*G NEXTEL setting off the alarm!!!

I had something similar to this. In my room at home, in the basement, I had just replaced my 2.1 speaker setup on my computer with a 4.1 speakers. I then moved the 2.1 speakers to my TV. Late at night, I would hear voices occasionally, which turned out to be CB conversations. This confused me, since it always stopped right before I woke up enough to make me realize what had happened. I then had to cut power to these speakers to prevent this. Scared the stuff out of me a couple nights

When I was 16 and worked in a fast food joint, there was a truck stop across the street. We had a pa system that we called orders back on....one day we had a NASTY conversation between a couple of truckers going throughout the whole restaurant....it was hysterical...we were rolling and the managers were freaking cuz they couldn't get it to turn off!! Too funny some of that stuff!
