Why do they think that we can't figure it out ???
I just got through dealing with a lady that her husband told her that the porn that was on thier system was our fault. That we had been using thier system and browser to surf for porn when we were repairing it at our shop last month. Since we had committed this unspeakable act tha she expected us to repair her system for free and reimburse her for the last set of repairs. After looking at the computer and seeing that the dates first never coincided with the 2 dates that the system was in the shop and that the dates of the access spanned over a year. I called Mrs. ##### to let her know that as unfortunate as this was that while her system was at our shop it was not used to view any form of pornography. At this point i was priviliged to listen to a 30 minute tirade of how it had to have been us since no one in her family would look at that kind of smut and a lecture full of rightous indignation that we would accuse someone in her family of looking at this filth.
First of all we never accused her family of anything only told her that the porn was not accessed while in our shop.
Second even though we never accused her of anything when she brought the system in she spent the better half of an hour insulting and accusing us.
Third we have DSL in shop and all but 2 techs have some form of high speed internet access. The thought of trying to use a 2 year old compaq, Cyrix processor, 32 megs RAM and AOL to veiw anything on the internet with what we have avaliable stretches credibility to the max.
I can win any argument with any computer made yet. Since they really haven't learned to fight back.

WTF.... What the heck are you talking about???
Come on! You're a tech. Why did you let her talk to you like that?
How DARE she talk like that???
What? She tried to blame you for that files? And you did what? Discussed it with her for half an hour?
If all you say is true, and no one downloaded those files using her machine, you could even press charges against her for saying things that are not true. About you, the other techs and the store you're working for.
As long as the date of that files show the truth, tell her to shut her mouth. And if she won't, MAKE her shut her mouth, by pressing charges against her!!!
No one should blame us for things that we haven't done!!!! There are some proof. Keep that in mind!
Good luck.

OMG... That husband should be shot. Wife finds his stash and he blames ya'll. Sue them for slander. Its more than obvious that the lady does not realise that her husband is lying to save his butt. I don't know how that works in SA, but here the acusation that your shop downloaded porn would be a major problem, even if it was not true. The gossip ring would have that around town in an hour to the detrement of your shop.
You are in the clear if the dates are from before you did the work. Its amazing that people cannot see the truth before their eyes.......
Good Luck

Sounds like her home life can't be that great anyway. If it was, her husband wouldn't have to watch 'spanktravision'.
We had an incident like that about 2 years ago. Turns out her 13 year old son was checkin' it and wreckin' it. Regardless to say she and her husband wrote a letter of apology when we threatened a slander suit. We threatened only because she was going to start spreading the rumors of us surfing for porn with customers' machines, yadda, yadda.

Had a similar kind of incident, although customer didn't blame me for it.
Customer was good friend of family and had set up a computer for the kid to do "homework" on. Installed AOL (against my better judgement, but hey, they're the customer) About a week later was talking to customer when dad commented they were getting a lot of porn mail (spam). Told him I would check it out.
Parents had set up a supervisor accounts in AOL and also set up accounts for son (15) and daughter (6!). Son's email, however was getting a large amount of porn mail. Turns out son had hacked parents supervisor password (it was real easy to figure out) and had changed his user profile to show he was a 22-year-old. (Kid admitted it to me!!)
I also pulled up internet history (Parents or kid didn't know about that) and show a trail of porn sites in kids & DAD's account.
Needless to say, mom was not happy and shut off internet access to whole family.
Point is, document what happens and prove it to customer. Unless customer is smart enough to cover tracks (most aren't), you usually have tools to prove case.
