The Beast is dead. Long live the Beast!
Yes, I've retired Beast III. I was doing work at a law firm that had just bought and merged another firm, and they said they were taking everything in the building that wasn't a Celeron or better and donating it to local schools. I was told to take anything I wanted. So I figured, OK, why not? My new Beast (Beast IV, if you will) is an AMD K6-2 350 with 64MB PC100 RAM. I also finally got the monitor I've been wanting for so long. It's nice to be out of the 640x480 world at last! (-: Maybe now my eyeglass prescription won't change every week.
And I tried, Oh, I tried to get my wife a decent system. I still have it in the trunk of my car. It's a Celeron 366 (don't ask how I got it out of the building...OK, it was in an old case and no one knew) with 64MB PC100 RAM. I tried to tell her it would be better, but she says she likes her (choke) Packard Bell! Oh, well, the kiddies get a nice system, anyway (-:
I did get her a new monitor though.
I guess there's no point to this, just to say that you will never hear about my AMD 486-133 ever again. Or how about this for a question: What is the coolest thing you ever got for free? Someone at some company was throwing something away and it ended up at your house? This has to top my list. Two monitors, two systems, plus a P100 Motherboard and an 8.4G IDE drive to upgrade my server with. How 'bout it?

Someone gave me a 286 in 1998. Talk about that high tech EGA video card. It even had a whole 20MB HDD.

I got 40 286 machines from a cabling job once. Got to love them MFM hard drives. I think the only thing I kept from them were screws. Oh well.

I'm not quite dead yet! I'm feeling better. I think I could go for a walk.

Last friday I got 4 Intel CC820 motherboards that are now in the process of going back to Intel. All free. I also got about 1000 sticks of 32 pin ram. I believe they are 1/2 mb or so sticks. I don't know much about it? Hey, you guys with the 286's need ram?

I am SO sorry for the miscommunication. When I said I retired Beast III, I was of course not referring to theBeast, whose input I value as I do all the posters here, and whom I would never consider retiring against his will.
I've been calling my 'puter's The Beast since '85 when I bought my first IBM, a PC-XT with a full 640KB RAM and a 10MB MFM hard drive. That was The Beast. Eventually it became the QEII's anchor. The next Beast, or Beast II, was an AT&T 286-12 with one meg of RAM and a 240MB Quantum hardcard (remember those?). The third beast, Beast III, which I just retired, began life as a 386-40 with 4MB of RAM, but I've made countless upgrades to it, which is why its official name at retirement was Beast III.1a2bSP8.
Fifteen years, three Beasts. I bet Beast IV lasts five years too (-;

Hehe. I've called my 'puter "FRED" for years. My father was an OPP, and the secretaries often called their systems FRED, which is an anagram for "F***ing Ridiculous Electronic Device".

Most of my stuff came from work...
I recently got a 4kva server battery backup system (yes it's huge). The batterys were bad in it. Instead of putting the OEM batterys in it (they wanted $220 ea) I put in deep cycle marine batterys. Now I can go 4 day without power and still run my PC. :-)

The best haul I ever made was when a real estate agency called me and asked if I wanted to haul off a bunch of old computer equipment. I almost didn't go on the call as I figured it was junk. What I wound up with was: 6)HP Laser Jet IID's 2)P-133 systems 4)NEC 15" monitors 1)Phillips 19" monitor and several boxes of misc. parts. All the stuff was in good working condition. My back hurt for a week after that load.
