Post Anybody know what causes this?

    Just wondering......

I've had three very different systems, just occasionally, boot up to loading the Windows desktop, then go into a sort of super slo-mo. The mouse pointer will only jerk to a new location about once a second, an icon will appear occasionally. A hard reset cures it, after the Scandisk....

Happened once to my K6, a few times to the old P133/VX at work, more often to the Celeron at work. Only common factor I can see is all using Win98 SE. Is it a known problem?

Check to see what background applications are running. Open the close program dialogue box and end task on non critical programs that are open until you find the offending program. After that disable the startup of that proggie with msconfig.

Try changing to standard VGA drive with your video card. Drivers more often then not can cause serious issues.

Also you can remove the enum key in your registry under hkeylocalmachine. That will remove all your hardware profiles.

IDE Controllers? Are they using standard or bus mastering. Check that one. BIOS Updates?

and of course the obvious like msconfig disable all your startup junk.

    Good Luck!

I have had similar things happen...with Virus Scanners. Occasionally I get *****ious and tell it to scan once a month at X date at boot up. Of course when that date comes around I forget about it and when the AV proggy runs in the background everything moves in slow motion. I get pissed off and call up the Taskman only to realize that it is the AV.

Also could be your network setting (say if you are on a DSL connect and it has problems locating an IP - could be a rare thing).

Or, it might just be windows being windows...you never know what to expect from it.

Thanks for the feedback. I am a bit inclined to put it down to Windows being Windows! However if it happens again when I can waste the time, I'll leave it until the Task Manager will come up & see if it's something in the background got stuck. None of the machines that have done it are networked - all our network machines are DOS, & just ...work...
