Post Shutdown problem

I have a clone PC (windows 98), when you try and shutdown the PC Windows closes and the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in the top left hand corner of the screen. To power down the PC you must manually push the button. When you power it back on the PC boots straight into windows WITHOUT the scandisk for a bad shutdown. The PC appears like windows is shutting down, but the PC is not powering off. I have tried a BIOS update and that worked for about 2-3 days. Any suggestions?

I'm assuming this is an ATX power supply..when you hold the off button for ten seconds does the machine power down completely?..also, check the bios to see if power management is enabled, and if it is, check to see what devices are configured to power on the machine..I had one like this a bit ago that did exactly the same thing, and the power button was set to put the machine in hibernate. If you are turning it off by holding the button in for ten seconds, that's another thing entirely..I would suspect either a bad power supply or a bad motherboard or a short in the reset button.

Or do you mean you changed some settings in the bios and that worked, but then stopped working.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

My wife had the same issue after she ran a Widows update for 98SE, I reinstalled 98 (for other reasons) did the updates and it hasn't happened since, maybe there is a software issue causing this?

I'd say go to http://housecall.antivirus.com and have the system checked out.

Also, try booting the PC in safemode and see if you can shut it down normal then...

Good luck!
