first thing, leave your girlfriends computer alone. (Just kidding). As to the cause of the problem, I am not sure. Try doing a windows 98 overlay to see if that helps.

It would probably botch the boot loader for win2k, because it would try to overwrite the boot sector. I wouldn't do that. What do you mean you can't get into it? Does the menu come up with both choices regularly? OR does it skip it or not let you choose anything. Also, give more info about what kind of system this is.

in booting...i go to the boot screen which lets me pic my OS. in win2000 i set win98 as my default OS. i had left win2k up for about 6 days. i shut down so that i could come back up in win98 to do some things...i selected win98 from my options menu. i noticed it taking FOREVER to load 98 and when it finally did, i lagged so bad. i shut the system back down and left it down for about 30 mins, then turned it on in attempts to go into 98 again, but it would lag around loading the autoexec.bat. im completely lost as to what to do being this is the first time ive really dealt w/ win2k. i just dont understand how it worked fine for both OSes for a few days, then the system started giving me problems going into 98. at this point in ready to back up the important things to a third hdd, thenstart over from scratch, first loading 98, then loading 2k. id prefer not to do this, so if anyone has any suggestions, im open for help ;D

i have norton av 2000 loaded on win98. booting into safe mode works though. like i said going into normal 98SE mode it looks like it hangs in the autoexec.bat or loading windows 98 drivers..

Try going into Norton AV on Windows 98 and excluding the Windows 2000 drive from Virus Scans.
