My 700MHz system runs VERY, VERY slow! I mean like to load up IE5 it takes about 30 seconds, to load Windows Explorer, about a minute, and to boot up...well...let's not go there My old system, a 350MHz K-6 runs 4 times as fast as my 700 when I benchmarked the two of them. The specs on my 700 are as follows:
700Mhz K-7
128MB of RAM
35GB 5200 RPM HDD (slow as hell)
56K v.90 software based modem
4x4x24 Burner
10x software based DVD drive
I am wondering if I should replace my 700MHz processor and get either a 650MHz or 800MHz.

I totally disagree ( sorta )
percieved speed is what your going to get complaints about.
if it looks faster and acts faster and benchmarks slower something is obvisously wrong with your benchmark.

I have not used WhatCPUIs but most utilities that report cpu mhz cannot actually read the speed from the chip, they simply tell the processor to perform a specific operation/set of operations and time it, then report a estimate.
I use WCPUID ver 2.6d and it even tells me the multiplier and the main clock speed.

Yes there seems to be something in the air with the oem 700 athlon processors. But first I would look At the boards you are using. All have documented problems with processors over 650. The first thing I would do is update your bios, and get the lates Miniport drivers for the VIA Appollo chipset. Preferbably the 4-1 minport driver update. This will update and recognize the CPU to AGP controller, CPU to PCI Bridge and so on. I have been having problems with my 750 on a Epox 7KXA. I did all the above mentioned, and it helped out considerably. I also have 650 on an Abit KA7, This machine runs like dream, not one ounce of fuss.
Good Luck!

I am using an OEM 700 which I purchased locally about two months ago. I LOVE IT. I have had no problems and can run whatever OS I like. System is as follows;
Athlon 700
FIC SD-11 MB version 1.7
192 MB RAM
Voodoo 3 AGP
IBM 20 GB ATA-66 7200 RPM
I am running Win 98 SE and 2000 dual boot in the same partition. Soon to redo with partitions and add Corel Linux.

I realize this is an old thread, but...
Last year I bought a first-generation Athlon 700. I went crazy trying to get it to work (under Win98). The only way I could get the system to boot was by raising the CPU's core voltage. (I just happened to have a mobo whose BIOS let me do that!)
I scoured one site after another for clues. I was sure I had something else set wrong in the BIOS.
Finally, after a week of futility, I called AMD Support (which I should've done in the first place). The first thing the tech had me do was identify the CPU's type (generation). A few short tests later, she announced, "Take it back to the shop and try a different one."
I took it back. Lucky for me, though, they'd just received their first shipment of _2nd-generation_ Athlon 700s. I swapped for one, and it worked like a charm, first time up. You decide.
