One of the simplest backup devices are drives and software from ClickFree, so you might want to take a look at their products. My personal preference would be to get a decent external hard drive and Acronis True Image Home.
ClickFree has some nice features (plug in the drive and it runs an automatic backup, even on multiple computers) but their software is incapable of running a full system backup; it will only do data files. So, in the event of a hard drive failure, you still have to reload Windows and all of your software, so that takes a lot of time. Acronis will let you do full system backups, and you can set it to back up any data files that have been changed every 5 minutes. It requires more setup than ClcikFree, but offers much more comprehensive protection.
I've also run into a couple of machines where ClickFree's software has caused some networking problems. Every time the drive is plugged in to start a backup, Simple File Sharing gets disabled, so that would be a problem on many small peer-to-peer networks.
