No audio device
My system is Compaq Evo D380mx, P4 1.66, Intel 845g, 512MB RAM, integrated AC97 audio, XP-pro SP2, WMP10. The other details from Everest scan (done when system was ok) are :-
Audio Adapter Intel 82801DB ICH4 - AC'97 Audio Controller [A-1]
Audio Controller Type Intel 82801DB(M) ICH4
Codec Name SigmaTel STAC9750/51
Codec ID 83847650h
S/PDIF Output Supported
Device Description SigmaTel Audio
Driver Module STAC97.sys
Driver Description SigmaTel C-Major Audio
Driver Date 02-26-02
Driver Version 5.10.0.3630
Driver Provider SigmaTel
INF File oem4.inf
Hardware ID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C5&SUBSYS_0511147B&REV_01
Location Information PCI bus 0, device 31, function 5
So far (last five years) audio has played smooth. Just had to replace the heatsink fan ... got a technician to do it. After that windows sounds (start / shutdown) did play, and I did not check any music. Later, WMP refused to play music. Device manager shows all ok, but control panel > sound properties > volume says "no audio device". Now, even the windows sounds are not coming.
Thanks for help.

abanerji have you uninstalled the sound software and removed the ac97 entry from device manager, rebooted and reinstalled them?

Thank you NooNoo. Uninstall sound software - how to go about it? As I see, both intel audio controller and sigmatel codec don't appear in my system (as per latest Everest, which I posted). On the other hand, a "modem # 2" is appearing now as a sound device !
Secondly, there is no ac97 entry in device manager now. I am pasting below what appears under "Sound, video and game controllers" :-
Audio codecs
Legacy audio drivers
Legacy video capture devices
Media control devices
MPU-401 compatible MIDI device
Standard game port
Unimodem half-duplex audio device
Video codecs What should be my next step, please? Thanks again

Go to Start > Run and type in services.msc
scroll down to Windows audio and right click to get to properties.
Make sure the Startup type is set to Automatic on the general tab and that under the Recovery tab set First, Second and Subsequent failures to Restart the service.
Although this doesn't cure the underlying problem, (it happened to me after a Trojan infected my machine and I'm still having other issues...) it will get your sound back.

Take shamus's advice after you have installed the sound driver from your compaq driver disk.

Thanks shamus, I tried your advice, but sound hasn't come back.
NooNoo, would only re-installing Sigmatel driver help, or I have to first run the intel chipset driver too? I am asking this because intel audio controller has gone missing too.
Additionally, I see a PCI / IRQ issue. Is it possible that during the heatsink fan change, the technician connected a wrong PCI slot? I am not a technical person, so please pardon my ignorance.
Thanks, and looking forward to views.

The chipset driver is always a good idea.
Explain the pci/irq issue.
The sound is onboard, so unless the technician was a complete doofus changing the hsf would not cause this.

The pci/irq issue ... well, sorry about my lack of technical knowledge. I read the Everest scans, and this (pasted earlier too) set me thinking :-
Earlier : PCI Devices (included) "Bus 0, Device 31, Function 5 Intel 82801DB ICH4 - AC'97 Audio Controller [A-1]"
Now : PCI Devices - above line missing
Earlier : Device Resources (included) "IRQ 17 Shared SigmaTel C-Major Audio"
Now : Device Resources - above line missing Please tell me what these mean? Thanks a lot

It means that the sound has been disabled in bios/setup or that the sound drivers are uninstalled, or that the sound chip on the motherboard has gone faulty.

Thank you NooNoo for all your advice. I only hope it's not a hardware issue

Try this:
Goto add hardware in control panel and start the process and when it says nothing found (assuming it doesn't find your audio controller) specify to add hardware and tell it it is already installed and that you will look in the list for the device.
Then scroll down to sound devices and search them for the appropriate audio controller.

CCT, this did not work. I tried, and the wizard listed Sigmatel's driver version 5.10.0.3630 (which was the one running well for past five years) ... so, I selected it. But, now DeviceManager shows SigmaTel C-Major Audio with yellow exclaimation mark (!) and an error message "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". So, I have to uninstall the old driver now.

Code 10 means a lack of resources. Sometimes it means that the device has gone faulty. Have you been into setup and checked whether the sound is enabled or not? If it is enabled, disable it, reboot and make sure it doesn't appear in device manager. Then reboot and enable it again and then try installing the updated driver.
