OK, I've got scandisk stuck on at every reboot. Any fixes please?
(This is whether it was a "bad" shutdown or not)
Even better would be a facility to turn off scandisk after "bad" shutdowns altogether, like in Win98 (If this does exist, I cant find it)
this is a legit thread(and its mine ;) ) so NO HIJACKING!
I will Wotpp where I will ... or until Noo edits me that is :DQuote:

Try this link about NTFS's 'dirty bit' CHKDSK /F = Dirty Bit:, there's links on that for all the variations of the fault & also Fsutil (the tool to set the dirty bit)... (& this one btw is nothing to do with sp2, as xp has always done this ;)).Quote:

Just read this.... might be pertinent or might not...

Still, O'Halloran said companies should adjust to SP2, given both its security benefits and that it will be the standard on new PCs.
"Ultimately, it is our opinion that regardless of what you think the cost might be, that the benefits of Service Pack 2 far outweigh the small little annoyances of trying to fix these application incompatibilities," he said.
I don't have access to files on my external drive any longer.
I get an I/O device error when I try.
I've searched and cannot figure out what I need to change to access these files. I uninstalled the sp2 and still can get to the drive but not once I install the sp again.
I'm try'ing SP2 on new MB and don't like it ,
games seem to run worse than on other old slow MB running AGP4x (like DOOM3 and PainKiller) , new MB is 8x (using a FX-5200 AGP8x) ,
won't remember 'sign-ins' for web,sites and email log-ins ,
mouse pointer drifts across screen now and then .
I'll give it a day or two more and probably uninstall it or reinstall XP .
Bah. I'm not sure if its just my compy or what, but my startup splash screen no longer has XP Home/Pro, and Compy hangs on splash screen. (I'm on Pro...came with the compy, didn't pay for upgrades or system, so don't slam me about paying me too much for the OS) running an older system, Asus K7M Mobo, 900 MHz AMD Thunderbird, 256 MB Ram, ATI 9200 SE (catalyst drivers), SB Live! 5.1 (sounds same as factory sound board), all drivers are updated except for BIOS, running through Cable modem, etc., etc., etc.
was receiving crashes every 15 minutes due to a "device driver" but windows error reporting could not recognize what driver was bad. possibly BIOS driver or drivers for my RAM (one 128 MB Ram chip that came with compy still in original ram slot, and one 128 MB Ram Kingston PC 100 chip given to me by an ex roomie (gave me spare compy parts to pay for his side of the rent.))
Virus-free, Adware free, system cleaned and defragged, and still having the same problems with drivers. I have the Belarc advisor if any techies need any more detailed info.
btw - all programs are legit, even though I didn't get the disks for system recovery. (bought base compy (case/mobo/processor/floppy drive) off EBay for $265...really not a bad deal for what I've got now.) Thanks in advance for any info on whether its SP2 or Windows User Error https://forums.windrivers.com/images.../2006/04/1.gif

EDIT: just posted this message a few minutes ago, system crashed again while accessing Hotmail email. GRRR, "a device driver caused the error but we cannot find why"
From someone else
Windows XP SP2's new firewall features really improve the built-in firewall for Windows. However, I was caught off guard when dealing with my remote Oracle installs. The XP SP2 firewall agressively has blocked nearly all the ports. This is generally a good thing. So I opened up 1521 for Oracle expecting this to open up access to Oracle.
Instead, I kept getting timeout errors. After some trial and error (and using the logging built into the firewall), I determined that Oracle uses many ports that seem to be changing. I was unaware of this. That makes it really hard to figure out which port to open up.
I found a solution though that seems to work very well. You can not only add ports to the firewall exception list, you can add applications. I added both Oracle.exe and Tnslsnr.exe to the exception list. This got connectivity back up and running again.

sp2 broke my wireless connection, my pci card gave me good quality and connected to the router but the windows bit of wireless told me that i had limited or no connectivety. The IP i eventually got was a 169 one not the 192.168 one i needed.
Tried everything, removed it, reloaded it, repair install of slipstreamed sp2.
in the end a reload of the drivers cured it. yes, i had done this many times before.
Damm sp2 to hell !!!!!
