hmmm there is definitely something borked with your install. Annoying as it is, can you back up, format and start again?

My friend and I discussed this - he is looking for his XP Pro disk as we are hesitant to try with the XP Home disk from Dell.

Mostly because the reinstall didn't work and my friend's bias I guess.

What types of problems could we expect with a re-format and installation of the diff os? Similar issues with the OEM hardware installation?

The problem would be that the COA would not work with the XP pro disk... meaning you will have to buy an XP Pro licence....

Repairs and formats and reinstalls are two different things entirely. If your xp home disk is scratched, you will have a problem.

Will give this driver a try later, although I believe that I tried it already, need to check when I get home.

I have run system file check already with the Dell XP disk in - runs - takes a VERY long time with progress bar - then closes without details- is that normal? I figured no.

Hi...finishing up at work and killing time so I figured you may want to know about the (eventual) happy ending to this story.

I finally fixed this issue about 3 weeks ago. Backed up, reformat and I did a re-install attempt, got some evil BSOD's and finally found this...

Dell sent XPS 600 buyers an XP CD that doesn't have the correct SATA driver on it. I called Dell, gave some BS about losing the CD and had a new one sent to me. Came next day and was thankfully sent for free.

Anyway - the replacement XP CD worked and sound issue has been fixed.

OK, I have same problem, but what does [SATA] drivers have to do with the 'X-Fi' sound card? I will check out the link you provided.

Basically I did fresh XP Pro SP2 install; layered SP3 over that, then put Dell latest drivers on - I did see some SATA stuff, but since my hard disks were working, I did not apply any of the Dell SATA drivers. ?

It gives that WDM (Code 10) - yellow exclamations - could not start, blah blah - and very garbled sound, so for sure this is the same issue.

And if they can send updated disk with correct SATA drivers, then they also should have latest SATA drivers on their site, so how would that be any different from just going getting latest drivers from Dell site?

Have you tried just accessing Dell Support and entering your Service Tag number and getting the latest chipset and audio drivers (if available(?

Yes, definitely - that's the first thing I did - I retrieved all drivers from Dell, to match original setup. Now, keep in mind, I am now on XP Pro SP3, if that makes a difference, and I get 'garbled sound' and the warning/error "X-Fi Audio Processor (WDM) - Code 10, could not start" in the devices. So, I'm thinking, since it cannot start the audio processor, it makes sense that the sound is rather 'garbled and crackly." Any help would be appreciated. I won't reinstall XP, but I will uninstall/reinstall whatever devices + drivers, if anyone has an idea of what 'sequence' and so forth?

In searching the 'Net - this seems to be a rather common problem, but I've yet to see a definitive, clean-cut solution. I have Dell XPS 400 series (490 I think), with Pentium D processor. Now, I will tell you that I loaded 'chipset' update as one of the LAST driver updates, and that did correct one other "exclamation" point in devices - can't recall which one - so, maybe if I load chipset first and/or go and unload / re-load the Dell X-Fi audio drivers - do you think maybe that would work?

See, I did not unload reload the audio drivers yet - should i use "revo-uninstaller"?
Also, I saw that some guy has packaged an "X-Fi re-install package":

To be honest, I really don't know the model of X-Fi card this guy has in the computer.

The generic site for Dell XPS 600 says they used "Sound: Advanced Sound Blaster® AudigyTM 2 ZS (D)4 sound card delivers high definition audio." - http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfb/deskto...00&cs=28&s=dfb

That is a different card (and driver ?) than the X-FI; http://support.creative.com/Products...T=CategoryID:1

When cycling (trying different) drivers, removal of the old is recommended before installation of the next. Revo does that well.

Creative have a good resource for 'how to identify' your card.

"Some guy" may have a good download or it could be risky - that's always a possibility.

Thanks - but I think mine is a Dell XPS 490 - another problem -they (Dell) provide no exact external way to identify your model -
and as for the drivers & so forth, I am just going by the exact drivers I downloaded from the Dell site, using the machine's precise Service Tag, so that should be valid - as far as 'sound,' all they seem to include are the X-Fi drivers - granted the 600 vs. the 490 - there may have been some differences.

I will try Creative resources to identify the exact model - I hate having to pull the card. Thanks again for all the help.
