Making Folder Private Gives a Password Prompt at Bootup - HELP!

Hi guys! I'm running XP Pro SP3. I made a folder 'private,' thinking it would password-protect the folder. But, when I boot my computer, I'm prompted for a password to start my computer. This never happened before and its not what I want. I'd always boot my computer without a password prompt.
And when I try to undo changes by right-clicking properties on any folder, on the 'Sharing' tab, I see that the 'Make this folder private' option is greyed out.

How do I stop my computer from booting up with a password prompt? What do I do?

I would assume you go to your user account in control panel and remove that password

koolx, you cannot make folders private in XP without each individual user, even if there is only a single user on the system, being forced to log in with a password. Private folders are only visible to the user that owns them; so logging in with username and password is the only way this restriction can be enforced. Encrypting files is a totally different process.

To undo the change and make the folder public again, you have to click Start, My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, View, then in the Advanced Settings pane, scroll to the bottom and uncheck the option to "Use Simple File Sharing". Click OK to close everything out.

Next you will need to go to any folder you made private, right click on it, then click Properties, then the Security Tab. Once you're there, click the Add button, type in Administrators, then click OK. Finally, select the Administrators group you just created and put a check mark in the Allow Full Control box, click OK, and you should be done.

Hi, slgrieb. I dont have that feature that you said of going to the Security Tab of a folder through properties. The only tabs on a folder that I see after clicking on properties are: General, Sharing, and Customize. Just as a reminder, I got SP3 on XP Pro.

And will your tip get my computer from prompting a password at bootup? I want my computer to act like it did before... no password prompt at bootup at all. Let me know and thanks.

Are you logged in to the computer with an administrator account? You said that you have XP Pro, which should have the tabs.

An alternative to try, you can hit start, run, and in the box type control userpasswords2 . Choose the account that you want to use, and uncheck the box that says " Users must enter a user name and password ". I don't reccomend this, however, as it will automatically put you into a set account every bootup, and if you plan to surf the web or check E-mail, you should do so with a non admin account. Good luck!

Hi, Guts3d. Im not sure if Im logged in as an admin. And no, there are no tabs like the ones specified by slgrieb in the properties window of folders. Again, when I click on properties of any folder, I get the following tabs: General, Sharing, and Customize.

And I tried entering 'control userpasswords2' into the run command. It doesnt solve the issue... I still get a password prompt. What do I do now?
